Spotlight Series: Q&A with Paul Madan of The Wellbourne Clinic

We’re proud to introduce the first-ever edition of our Spotlight Series. This will be a quarterly feature available exclusively to active members of UK Business Portal. Each edition highlights the story behind a small business, giving readers valuable insight into the people and principles that drive it. To launch the series, we spoke with Paul Madan of The Wellbourne Clinic.
What does your business do, and who do you help?
The Wellbourne Clinic is a distinctive private residential addiction treatment centre located in Warwickshire. Founded by experts in alcohol and substance misuse treatment, our clinic offers a supportive setting ideal for individuals taking their initial steps towards recovery. Our dedicated team includes doctors, therapists, and specialised support personnel.
At the Wellbourne Clinic, the goal is to deliver exceptional treatment to a maximum of six individuals with personalised care as our core focus. Emphasising holistic care, we prioritise the individual as a whole, not just the addiction issue. Our facility is tailored to cater to the specific needs of each person under our care.
With a strong emphasis on health and nutrition, we are committed to ensuring a positive and enriching experience for every client we serve.
What inspired you to start your business?
Quite simply put, addiction is a chronic, lifelong, terminal illness if not treated professionally and kills thousands of people in the UK every year.
We at the Wellbourne Clinic are committed to help those who still suffer from this killer disease and to help and support our residents’ families and loved one’s along the way. The Wellbourne clinic is not just a business, it’s a passion.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
No day is ever the same here, as each person who comes into treatment at the Wellbourne Clinic has different needs and aspirations but the core principle is the same, people just want to get better and learn to live a productive and fruitful life without the use of alcohol, drugs or any other destructive behaviour.
What makes your service or approach different?
The key selling point here is the fact we are a therapy based 6-bed only detox and rehabilitation centre as our residents prefer the peace and quiet of our rural location in stunning Kenilworth, Warwickshire. With a therapy lead service, we are able to really look at the underlying causes of each individual’s addiction. This is important because addiction is a symptom of what is going on underneath for someone. We have a staff to resident ratio of 2 to 1 and this is really appreciated.
What’s been a proud or memorable moment since launching?
Since opening in October 2023 we have had over two hundred admissions, and helped each one on their recovery journey.
Have you faced any major challenges, and how did you overcome them?
The disease of addiction alone is a major challenge because it kills thousands of British people every year yet it can be treated if people are honest, open-minded and willing enough to embrace change in their lives.
What’s a common misconception about your industry?
I think a common misconception is that people cannot break the chain of addiction. This simply is not true! With determination and a willingness to change a life of sobriety is possible. There are misconceptions around addiction being a choice, negative attitudes like this can make it difficult for people to reach out and ask for help. Substances chemically alter the brain, medically addiction is therefore considered a disease.
What advice would you give to someone entering your field?
To gain a good understanding of addiction and the recovery process. Have a non judgemental attitude and be willing to learn about co-occurring disorders.
Develop good communication and problem solving skills and understand how to advocate for individuals in recovery, connecting to helpful resources, and promoting their needs.
Person centred care is very important as each individual’s experience is unique.
What do you like about being listed on UK Business Portal?
