Kris Soul Photography Q & A feature

Q1: What does your business do, and who do you help?

I’m based in Edinburgh but travel all over Scotland, capturing weddings with a relaxed, natural, and unobtrusive approach. With over 16 years of experience, I work alongside a small team of like-minded photographers to help ensure each couple’s day runs smoothly. Our style blends candid storytelling with gently posed, elegant formal shots. Whether it’s an intimate elopement in a secluded garden or a classic wedding in the heart of Edinburgh, I’m here to preserve your memories with warmth, professionalism, and creativity.

Q2: What inspired you to start your business?

I have always had a deep interest in photography, especially in how a single image can hold so much emotion and meaning. That interest gradually grew into a passion, and starting my own business felt like the right way to bring that passion to life. I wanted to create something that would allow me to connect with people and help them preserve their most important memories.

Q3: What do you enjoy most about your work?

What I enjoy most is meeting new people and being invited into such a special moment in their lives. Every couple is different, and it is a real privilege to be the one capturing those real, emotional moments that they will look back on for years to come. It never feels like just a job.

Q4: What makes your service or approach different?

Our style is very natural and relaxed. We focus on capturing the day as it unfolds, without forcing anything. Most of our work is in a documentary or reportage style, but we also include a few gently directed formal shots if the couple wants them. We aim to be as unobtrusive as possible, so people feel at ease and can enjoy the day without interruption.

Q5: What’s been a proud or memorable moment since launching?

Winning wedding photography awards in Scotland was definitely a proud moment for me. It felt like a recognition of the work and care that goes into every wedding. But just as meaningful are the moments when couples message me afterwards to say the photos brought them to tears or made them laugh all over again. That feedback is what stays with me.

Q6: Have you faced any major challenges, and how did you overcome them?

Weddings come with pressure. You have to capture every key moment, and you often have limited time and changing conditions. In Scotland, the weather can be a big challenge too. We overcome this by preparing for every possible scenario. From having backup gear to knowing the location inside out, I make sure nothing is left to chance. Experience and preparation go a long way in keeping things calm and professional on the day.

Q7: What’s one thing you wish you knew before starting out?

I wish I had fully understood how much of the job happens away from the camera. When I first started, I thought most of the work would be on the wedding day itself. In reality, a huge amount of time goes into preparation, communication, and editing. Managing expectations, timelines, and all the small details takes as much care as the photography itself. It is a full process, not just one event.

Q8: What’s a common misconception about your industry?

Many people think wedding photography is easy and highly paid, that you turn up on the day, take some photos, and that’s it. In reality, there is a huge amount of work behind the scenes. From planning and communication to travel, setup, and equipment prep, the day itself is only a small part of the job. After the wedding, there are hours of careful editing to ensure everything is delivered to a high standard. It takes real dedication and attention to detail from start to finish.

Q9: What advice would you give to someone entering your field?

Obsess over preparation but then be ready to let it all go. I always plan ahead: check the locations, make sure my gear is ready, and know the schedule inside out. But once the day begins, anything can happen. The best moments are often unplanned.

I’ve learned that the most powerful images aren’t always the most polished, they’re the ones filled with genuine emotion. A quick glance, a tear, a laugh no one expected, that’s what I look for.

Q10: What do you like about being listed on UK Business Portal?

Reaching a wider audience and introducing our brand to others.
